The new TOPIK IBT Exam: Changes, similarities, mock tests (쓰기)

TOPIK IBT Exam Test Site Environment

With the introduction of the Internet-Based Test (IBT), the TOPIK exam is now available in two different flavours. There are several changes to be aware of for the IBT, especially in the 쓰기 (Writing) section. Here's a breakdown of what we've gathered so far:

General Insights into the TOPIK IBT Writing Section

Based on early observations and feedback, we've gathered some key takeaways:

  • Stricter Grading for 쓰기: Many learners are finding that their 쓰기 점수 (writing scores) are lower than anticipated. The grading appears to be quite strict, potentially differing from previous expectations or Paper-Based Test (PBT) standards.
  • Changes to Question Formats: The PBT Q52 ("plain form" fill-in-the-blank) seems to be omitted from the IBT. The IBT writing section now primarily features questions equivalent to the PBT Q51 (daily life sentence completion), Q53 (graph or diagram description), and Q54 (longer argumentative essay).
  • Typing Skills are Crucial (타자연습!): This is a very important point for all test-takers. With the exam now computer-based, proficient typing skills in Korean (타자연습) are essential for completing the writing section effectively within the time limit.
  • Q54 Focus Shift: The Q54 task appears to be more focused on "사회문제" (current societal issues). For example, topics like environmental concerns or, as seen in an online example, "자동차 자율 주행" (autonomous car driving) are most common.
  • No More 원고지 for Q54: A significant change for Q54 is the removal of the traditional 원고지 (squared manuscript paper).
    • This means the length requirement is now 400-500 non-원고지 "자" (characters), as opposed to the PBT's 600-700 "원고지 자".
    • Consequently, IBT test-takers do not need to be familiar with the specific rules of writing on 원고지.

Example of the New Q54 Style

An example of the kind of prompt you might encounter for the new Q54:

자동차의 자율 주행 기술이 발달하면서 자율 주행 택시 운행을 도입해야 한다는 주장이 제기되고 있다. 자율 주행 택시 운영을 상용화하는 것에 대해서 자신의 의견을 쓰고 두 가지 근거를 포함하여 주장하는 글을 쓰시오. (400-500자)

(Translation: With the development of autonomous driving technology, proposals are emerging to introduce autonomous taxi services. Write your opinion on commercializing autonomous taxi operations, including two supporting reasons in your argument. (400-500 characters))

Practicing for the TOPIK IBT: Mock Tests

Currently, specific TOPIK IBT mock tests are not available. However, a valuable resource is the "토픽 IBT 체험하기" (Experience TOPIK IBT) functionality on the official TOPIK website.

This feature provides a simulated testing environment where you can:

  • Get a feel for the general flow of the computer-based exam.
  • Become accustomed to the user interface (UI).
  • Practice navigating the different sections and question formats.
  • Experience the timing constraints.

Using this simulation is highly recommended to familiarize yourself with the digital testing environment before taking the actual exam.

Using TOPIK Easy6 for IBT Writing Practice

TOPIK Easy6 can be an excellent companion for your IBT preparation:

  • Ideal for Typing Practice (타자연습): Practicing writing answers directly in the app helps you build the necessary Korean typing speed and accuracy.
  • Simulates IBT Environment: Many (if not all) IBT test centers use tablets rather than full-sized computers. Writing on a smaller touch screen and staying concentrated for an extended period can be challenging. TOPIK Easy6 app provides a similar environment, helping you get used to composing answers on a mobile device.
  • Adapting to Stricter Grading: As the IBT grading is perceived to be stricter, consistent practice with feedback, like that offered in TOPIK Easy6, becomes even more important for maximizing your score.
  • IBT-Specific Content Coming Soon: We are actively working on adding new practice questions specifically tailored to the TOPIK IBT format and topics.

We hope this overview helps you navigate the changes in the TOPIK IBT writing section. Stay tuned for more updates and tips!

Good luck with your studies!
