Easy6 Launch Week Day 1: Easily Absorbing the Wongoji Rules with our Wongoji Input

August 20, 2025

Easy6 Launch Week Day 1: Wongoji Input! When taking the TOPIK (PBT), there's an additional struggle that's not commonly encountered in daily life.

The last two writing questions need to be filled into a square grid called "원고지" (Wongoji). Sounds fine, right? Just fill it in!

The thing is that it comes with a lot of specific rules about how to fill it in, which you have to learn separately. It can be a pain to memorize on top of all the Korean you've been studying.

Those raised in Korea have historically learned this in elementary school, used it there, and then quickly forgot about it after becoming an adult. I'm closing in on 10 years in Korea and have yet to see Wongoji outside of TOPIK and pre-university education.

Here's some of the rules:

  1. One square takes 1 Korean character, 2 numbers, 2 lowercase letter or 1 uppercase letter

  2. Periods and commas should not be followed by a space. Question marks and exclamations however should have a space after them.

  3. In case you're about to put a period or comma in the first square of the line, instead merge it into the last square of the previous line, together with what was in that square.

This is the hand our TOPIK takers are dealt, so we better get learning! Which isn't easy, because it's difficult to get feedback on whether we're doing it correctly.

To help TOPIK learners naturally absorb these rules and prepare in an environment even more reflective of the real test, we've added Wongoji input to Easy6.

As you type into the squares, you can see exactly how all of the rules are applied. Super efficient learning: you're both practicing the questions, as well as learning the Wongoji rules, all at the same time!

We've got two more launch days coming up this week, so this is just the beginning. Looking forward to sharing the other new features!
